As part of our topic, P1/2 explored toys that have been around for a long time. Mrs Hunter showed the children the Lego she used to play with when she was younger – it only had blue, white, and green bricks! We compared this to modern Lego sets, which are much more colourful. The children agreed they preferred today’s bright and varied Lego pieces.
To finish, everyone received their own mini Lego set and instruction cards. They worked hard to follow the steps and build their own small models. It was a great way to learn about how toys have changed over time while practising our problem-solving and fine motor skills.
This week, our Primary 1 children have been exploring 2D shapes. On Thursday, we went on a shape hunt around the school, looking for circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles in our everyday environment. Then on Friday, we took our learning outdoors and used natural materials to create these shapes ourselves. It was a fun and hands-on way to reinforce their understanding! π΅πΊπ¨
As part of the Literacy in P1/2, the P2 children were doing the story The Little Red Hen. We were learning all about everything Little Red Hen had to do and how she made her lovely loaf of bread. The P2's thought it would be a great idea to make some bread and see what they thought of it. We worked hard measuring, sieving, mixing, kneading and proving the bread and learning lots of new words as we did this. The children thought it was very funny when the bread was all proved and we gave it a poke and all the air came out and it fell down like a bouncy castle out of air (as one of the children described it!) The bread was cooked and then the P2's shared it with the P1's and they enjoyed it with a little jam.
With the colder days setting in we thought it would be a lovely, warming activity for the children in P1/2 to make their own vegetable soup. The boys and girls worked hard cutting up the vegetables needed for the soup. Mrs Hunter made the soup and the children enjoyed eating it the following day. Some people had their soup blended and others wanted to see all the lovely vegetables that they had worked hard at cutting up. It was lovely and warm in our bellies on a cold day.
During Art π¨, we’ve been thinking about our physical traits and what makes us look unique. The children coloured in pictures to look just like themselves — matching hair, eye colour, and our uniforms! ποΈπ§π¦
As it is Autumn π, we’ve been having some fun with pumpkins π! This week, the children have been practising their hand-eye coordination by carefully hammering nails into the pumpkins π¨. It was a great way to build our motor skills — and we had lots of fun doing it! π
Our World Around Us topic this term has been Incredible Me π. The children have been learning all about what makes them unique — from their fingerprints 𧀠and names βοΈ to their physical traits ποΈππ. We then had some fun with props and disguises ππΆοΈπ©.
Who is it? πΈπ
Last week, we learned all about road safety π¦. We practised how to use a pelican crossing properly by standing behind the kerb πΆβοΈπΆβοΈ and waiting for the green man to appear β before crossing. We know it’s very important to hold an adult’s hand and to keep looking and listening until we’re safely on the other sideπ€ π π.
Here are some pictures of us practising what we’ve learned! πΈ
Here are some pictures of our class learning outside. The children are enjoying all the different learning areas and the resources within each. During September they have been building with the crates, wooden blocks and the Polydron. The children have been investigating their bodies and enjoying drawing around each other. They have been cooking and cleaning in the house and enjoying looking after the babies. In the sports area we have been developing skills in skipping and throwing balls, trying to score points by getting our ball in through the hoop! Some have enjoyed the quite areas, taking time to relax and read a book. Our water has been busy with our water trays and pouring and catching water on our water wall, and the children have been digging in the sand house. As you can see we are all very busy learning in our outdoor environment.
Here are some of the P1's practising how to write the letter a. Some were doing it on their whiteboards and some were practising in the sand trays. Well done boys and girls!
